How the overall IELTS band score is calculated
Average of four skills
Your overall band is the average of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, each scored from 0 to 9.
Rounded to the nearest half band
An average ending in .25 rounds up to .5, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Below .25 rounds down.
Raw score is Listening & Reading only
Listening and Reading are counted out of 40 and converted to bands. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against the official band descriptors.

How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Add your four skill bands, divide by four, and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to .5 and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7?
Roughly 30 out of 40 for Listening and Academic Reading, and about 34 out of 40 for General Training Reading.
Are Writing and Speaking scored out of 40?
No. Examiners mark them directly in bands from 0 to 9 using the official band descriptors.
Is this conversion exact?
It is a close estimate for practice. Official conversion can vary slightly between test versions.
